Choose Slim, Fareham - Weight Loss

Most people believe that dieting, willpower and exercise are the key to losing weight. Whilst sensible eating and some exercise is recommended, there is much more to successful weight loss than this. Here are some facts you may not be aware of:

Dieting doesn't work for most people long term

In America alone, dieting has grown to a $40 Billion-a-year industry at the same time as most dieters are failing. It’s estimated that 95% of successful dieters regain their lost weight (and more) within 1 - 5 years. The standard advice of talk therapy, journaling, keeping a food/mood diary, counting calories, carbohydrates and fat grams doesn’t appear to work for many.

Why is that? Are 95% of the population trying to lose weight just rubbish at it? When people either regain lost weight (having made a great deal of effort to lose it) or don’t manage to lose it in the first place, how does it feel? The chances are they may feel like failures, their self esteem can take a knocking, they may even feel guilty and ashamed, and they’ll beat themselves up… Does that really help or is it just making matters worse?

Mind - Body Connection

For hundreds of years doctors and scientists believed that our mind and body were not connected. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)In fact, most believed that our mind was only in our brain. Since the 1960's however, scientists, doctors and biologists have come to understand that not only are our mind and body connected, they are actually interconnected - our mind is matter, our cells (trillions of them) are intelligent and respond to our thoughts and feelings.

So what?

I'll give an example here of a limiting belief and how our thoughts affect our body. First of all, I'd like you to consider the scientific fact that your individual cells are constantly communicating with each other and that they 'hear' your every word and thought.

Jin Shin JyutsuConsider too that most of us operate unconsciously 95 - 99% of the time - sound strange? Have you ever driven to work and found you cannot remember the journey? You unconsciously drove your car to work. Do you consciously take each breath? No, your unconscious mind takes care of it. In fact, your unconscious mind is responsible for repairing cells, recognising harmful substances, manufacturing antibodies, telling you you’re hungry, abiding by your beliefs and so on.

By the age of six years old, you will have unconsciously downloaded more than you will ever learn in your entire lifetime. Your unconscious mind is constantly taking in stimuli that completely bypasses the conscious mind. So, if you were told early on that all the women (for example) in your family are overweight, guess what? You have an unconscious belief that has been imprinted on your cellular memory that your cells will do everything possible to manifest, you will grow up believing that statement and you will eventually become overweight.

That may seem simplistic or even melodramatic, but what if you had many other beliefs that reinforced that original belief?

How about magazine articles on dieting? Have you ever read articles that say carbohydrates are fattening, or women in the west are more prone to be overweight? Or maybe you've read that once you hit 30 (or 40) years of age, you automatically put on weight? Or that women are naturally heavier round the middle as they get older? And, have you ever stopped to ask yourself if any of this is really true? What about considering that your weight is a direct result of your cellular structure 'hearing' these limiting beliefs?

A true story

One of my former weight loss clients had a whole pile of limiting beliefs about her weight. Here's one of them:

She told me that if there were three pieces of bread left in the bread bin at breakfast time she always had to toast and eat all three pieces. When I asked her why she thought that was, she responded that it was because she was greedy. When we investigated this using Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), we discovered (to her amazement) that underlying the need to eat all three pieces was an admonishment that she had heard over and over again from her mother not to waste food. Coupled with this was her unconscious belief (born out through experience) that if she left one piece of bread in the bread bin her husband would chuck it out.

Once this realisation was unearthed, she never again felt the need to eat all three pieces of bread.

There are many, many other reasons as to why we overeat and are overweight and during the 12 week process we will go through all of them together. The most important thing to recognise is that no - one overeats just for the sake of it, there are always underlying reasons, limiting beliefs, triggering events, anxiety, stress and/or energy imbalances that are major  contributing influences.
